About the Job

The Packaging Operator is responsible for running and maintaining packaging department equipment (labellers, conveyors, casers, stackers, coders and other related packaging equipment) safely and efficiently to realise the site and business objectives.

Your Job Description

Dimensions

  • Maintain working knowledge and experience with wrapper operations, monitoring jams and ensuring effective bundling to prevent downtime due to handling errors.
  • Load packaging materials onto machines promptly to avoid line stoppages.
  • Inspect packaging, coding, and seals to verify conformance to specifications and make necessary adjustments.
  • Observe equipment operations and perform adjustments to ensure product specifications are met.
  • Ensure compliance with Business Unit SOPs, SOCs (Standard Operating Conditions), and Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP) standards.
  • Prepare equipment for the next production run, including size changes where required.
  • Follow all required safe work practices, including use of PPE, confined space safety, safe chemical handling, and fall restraints.
  • Ensure all documentation is completed clearly, accurately, and with required information.
  • Document all operational activities as required.
  • Perform other tasks and duties as delegated by the supervisor.
  • Communicate changes in product flow, equipment malfunctions, shortages, or specification deviations to the Production Supervisor or relevant personnel verbally and/or in writing.
  • Understand roles and responsibilities and the importance of compliance with EMS requirements.
  • Implement and comply with EMS requirements relating to environmental aspects, impacts, and applicable policies and regulations.

Principal Accountabilities

  • Work with the Shift Supervisor to continually improve plant performance while adhering to legislative and company standards.
  • Collaborate with shift-based leaders to prioritize shift activities and deliver plant targets.
  • Monitor Business Unit performance using Short Interval Control, daily and weekly OEE tracking, and identification of top losses.
  • Facilitate effective problem-solving using Lean Manufacturing techniques and implement containments and countermeasures.
  • Identify areas for improvement across processes, skills, knowledge, attitudes, and machinery.
  • Work with the Production Manager to improve plant performance.
  • Collaborate with the Maintenance Manager on LLF and PPM to improve machine availability.
  • Reduce and eliminate downtime caused by machine breakdowns.
  • Participate in continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Adhere strictly to company policies and procedures.

  • Identify workplace hazards and apply appropriate control measures.
  • Achieve 85% action closure from monthly HSE inspections.
  • Achieve 95% compliance with Behaviour-Based Safety (BBS) walk-arounds.

Environmental Management System (EMS) Objectives

Key Activities

  • Understand EMS roles, responsibilities, and conformity requirements.
  • Implement and comply with EMS requirements relating to environmental aspects, impacts, and applicable regulations.

Quality and Plant Compliance Delivery: GMP

Key Activities

  • Ensure manufacturing operations meet stipulated GMP requirements.

Key Accountability

  • Maintain strong knowledge and application of GMP standards in line with PZC GMP and NAFDAC requirements.

Quality Management System (QMS) Objectives

Key Accountability

  • Ensure effectiveness of the Quality Management System and drive continuous improvement.

Internal and External Relationships

  • Work collaboratively with staff to improve performance while adhering to legislative and company standards.
  • Work closely with the Line Manager and other leaders to deliver set objectives.

The Job Requirements

Qualification, Knowledge, Skills & Experience Needed

Required Qualifications

OND / HND in an Engineering-related discipline

Required Experience

  • Minimum of 1–3 years’ work experience in a similar position
  • Sound knowledge of engineering practices
  • Software knowledge
  • Excellent communication and presentation skills
  • Analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Ability to withstand stress and work under pressure
