About the Job

In partnership with our client, we are seeking an Editor-In-Chief to lead one of Africa's most influential technology publications into its next defining chapter. This is not just an editorial role. It is an opportunity to shape the narrative of an entire continent's technological future.

From commissioning consequential stories to building structured editorial franchises and commanding rooms full of Africa's most powerful decision-makers, the Editor-In-Chief will be the voice, vision, and engine of a publication on its way to becoming a global authority on Africa's digital economy.

If you are a bold, experienced editorial leader who believes technology is everyone's story and not just Silicon Valley's, we want to meet you.

Who are we looking for?

  • You are a storyteller with authority. Someone who understands that the most important journalism doesn't just report what happened, it shapes how the world understands what it means.
  • You are deeply embedded in Africa's business and technology ecosystems, with the relationships, context, and credibility to commission and shape stories that actually matter.
  • You are a newsroom leader who inspires high-performing teams to do their best work consistently, even under the pressure of a fast-moving news cycle.
  • You are commercially minded, understanding that a great publication must also be a sustainable and profitable one, and you're comfortable working at that intersection.
  • You are an institution builder, driven not just by today's headline but by the long-term editorial identity and global reputation of the publication you lead.
  • You are curious, imaginative, and ambitious—not as buzzwords but as a genuine way of approaching your work and the world every single day.

Your Job Description

Your Responsibilities…

Editorial Leadership & Vision

  • You will define and drive the publication's editorial direction, ensuring every story, franchise, and platform reflects the mission to be the definitive voice on technology and business in Africa.

  • You will conceive, commission, and shape high-impact stories that go beyond funding announcements to examine the real business, policy, and human impact of technology across the continent.

  • You will strengthen editorial depth and analytical rigour, building structured content franchises that establish the publication as a globally respected authority.

Audience Growth & Relevance

  • You will drive aggressive and sustained audience growth across key segments — founders, executives, investors, policymakers, and everyone curious about Africa's digital future.

  • You will ensure the publication's voice is present and authoritative at international conferences, industry events, and every forum where credibility can be built and reinforced.

Relationships & Representation

  • You will develop and maintain high-level relationships with key decision-makers across business, technology, and government in Africa and beyond.

  • You will serve as the public face of the publication — representing the brand in the press, on panels, and in conversations that matter.

Team Development & Operations

  • You will find, develop, and retain editorial talent — constantly building the team's skills, capacity, and sense of purpose.

  • You will set clear expectations and establish the processes and standards that lead to consistent, high-quality output across the newsroom.

Business Collaboration

  • You will work closely with the leadership team to shape the broader direction of the company and the publication.

  • You will partner with the leadership and partnerships team to build a robust, profitable, and sustainable publication that continues to grow.

What Success looks like…

  • Establish the publication as the single most important voice covering technology and business in Africa within two years, measured by audience growth, industry citations, and reader engagement.

  • Drive consistent and measurable audience growth quarter on quarter across the website, newsletters, video, and social platforms.

  • Commission and publish at least three landmark editorial franchises or investigative series annually that generate significant industry conversation and media pickup.

  • Build and maintain a high-performing, motivated newsroom with strong talent retention and a clear culture of editorial excellence.

  • Secure and grow the publication's visibility at no fewer than five major international conferences or industry events annually.

The Job Requirements

To be considered for this role you should have…

  • Extensive journalism and newsroom experience, with significant editorial leadership experience at a respected publication.
  • A deep understanding of Africa's technology and business ecosystems, with established relationships across the continent.
  • A proven track record of building and leading high-performing editorial teams that consistently deliver quality work.
  • Strong analytical and communication skills, with the ability to translate complex business and technology topics into compelling, accessible journalism.
  • Experience working at the intersection of editorial excellence and media business sustainability.
  • A genuine passion for Africa's digital future and the role journalism plays in shaping it.

Challenges you may face in this role…

  • Balancing the ambition to produce landmark, in-depth journalism with the pace and volume demands of a modern digital newsroom.
  • Maintaining editorial independence and integrity while working closely with commercial and partnership teams to keep the publication sustainable.
  • Scaling the publication's global credibility and reach while staying deeply rooted in the nuance and complexity of African markets.
  • Managing a largely remote, cross-continental team while maintaining a strong and cohesive newsroom culture.

The Goodies…

  • Competitive compensation package commensurate with senior editorial roles at major publications, including the possibility of equity compensation.
  • The rare opportunity to lead and define one of Africa's most influential media institutions at a pivotal moment in its growth.
  • A fully remote-first working culture that prioritises results, autonomy, and personal wellbeing over rigid hours.
  • Access to a diverse portfolio of platforms spanning a leading technology website, newsletters, events, video, and social media.
  • A collaborative, intellectually curious team of people who are passionate about telling stories that matter.
