Job Summary:
This will be a hands-on field engineer position with Hygiene Promotion and Community Mobilization experience. S/he will be accountable for technical contributions to WASH Infrastructure programming and construction project activities within the framework of the Sokoto emergency response program in the North West. The role will work with partners and locally recruited Community Mobilisers to lead the delivery of hygiene promotion messaging and create hygiene behaviour change.
Roles and Key Responsibilities:
Project Design and Implementation
- Lead WASH programming including planning, designing, implementation, and monitoring.
- Identify community water and sanitation requirements through needs assessments.
- Supervise WASH infrastructure works (e.g., contractors, suppliers, local artisans).
- Draft technical documentation, designs, and bills of measurement for WASH activities.
- Provide technical expertise to construction supervisors on infrastructure works.
- Support trainings for ‘Community WASH Focal Points’ on monitoring and maintenance.
- Conduct hygiene promotion sessions and household visits with Community Mobilizers.
- Organize and train Latrine Maintenance Teams and Water Management Committees.
- Mentor local committees on sanitation and water infrastructure management.
- Set up monitoring systems for daily inspection of WASH facilities.
- Plan weekly hygiene sessions with children and bi-weekly health awareness events.
- Coordinate with partners, community leaders, and other sectors for effective delivery.
- Organize data collection and prepare regular activity reports.
- Document success stories, best practices, and lessons learnt.
- Ensure protection, safeguarding, and gender mainstreaming in activities.
Information Management/Reporting
- Report daily progress to Infrastructure PM.
- Ensure accurate management of WASH infrastructure data.
- Submit regular reports to the team lead.
Security Management Responsibilities
- Manage day-to-day security in relation to program implementation.
- Follow security procedures and report breaches.
- Participate in personal safety training as required.
- Perform other relevant tasks as assigned.
Required Languages: English, Hausa
Travel: Willing and able to travel up to 50%.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
- Ability to handle multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.
- Strong interpersonal and teamwork skills.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience with partner capacity strengthening.
- Knowledge of Sphere standards related to WASH and Shelter.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office and design software (AutoCAD, QGIS, ArcGIS).
- Willingness to work in remote areas with limited connectivity.
- Good time management and customer service skills.
- Languages: Hausa and Kanuri are an advantage.
Supervisory Responsibilities: None
Key Working Relationships:
- Internal: Sector leads, Liaison Officers, Procurement, Finance, Administration, Protection, MEAL team, Emergency Coordinator.
- External: Partner Staff, Construction Supervisors, Contractors, Community Stakeholders, Community Committees, Vendors.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering, Hydrogeology, or related fields. License is a plus.
- Experience in public health, community development, or WASH sector preferred.
- 3-5 years’ experience in WASH supervision or construction management, preferably in humanitarian sector.
