Job Purpose:

The Gearman plays a key role in supporting vessel and yard operations by handling lifting gear and securing equipment. The role ensures that all tools and equipment used for cargo handling are in proper working condition, correctly positioned, and safely applied during container operations.

Key Responsibilities

  • Handle and secure lifting gear, twistlocks, and other cargo handling equipment during vessel operations.
  • Assist crane operators and stevedores in the correct attachment and detachment of lifting devices.
  • Inspect gear before and after use to identify wear, defects, or safety risks and report findings to the supervisor.
  • Follow instructions from the vessel supervisor or foreman for smooth and safe workflow.
  • Maintain cleanliness and organization of gear storage areas.
  • Adhere strictly to safety standards and use personal protective equipment (PPE) at all times.
  • Respond quickly to operational needs during loading and unloading activities, including gear changes and emergency adjustments.

Qualifications & Requirements

  • Minimum of a high school certificate or equivalent.
  • Previous experience in port operations, stevedoring, or a related field is an advantage.
  • Basic understanding of lifting gear and cargo handling equipment.
  • Physically fit and able to work in demanding outdoor conditions.
  • Strong awareness of safety procedures and teamwork.
  • Willingness to work in rotating shifts.
